Notes

Description
"Henry David Thoreau is best known as a naturalist and the author of Walden. However, there is another side to Henry, who can be known as a champion for justice. Henry's desire for social justice among all individuals became first evident on August 1, 1844 when he rang the steeple bell of First Parish Meetinghouse in Concord, Massachusetts to gather people to the town's courthouse. Ralph Waldo Emerson was going to deliver an anti-slavery lecture to remember the tenth anniversary of the freeing of slaves in the British West Indies. The bell that Henry rang partially melted when a fire destroyed the meetinghouse on April 12, 1900. The original bell can be viewed on the front lawn of First Parish in Concord. It commemorates the bell ringing event as well as the 200th birthday of Henry David Thoreau."--Page 4
