Description
Description
A biography of the author Aragon, who was prolific both in prose and in verse. He never ceased to apply with virtuosity the principle of "true lying" to his rich life, which was so full of mysteries and paradoxes: an illegitimate child who for a long time did not know the secret of his origins; an antimilitarist who was decorated in the First World War and then received medals during the Resistance; a dandy and Dadaist turned disciplined militant for the party of Stalin and Thorez; a surrealist poet converted to socialist realism; a ladies' man--and what ladies!--transformed into the bard of conjugal love, before discovering boys some time later... All of these different characters make up one man whose literary, intellectual, and political journey transcribed the spirit and the chaos of his era. Philippe Forest gives a fresh retelling of the sumptuous novel that was Aragon's long life, with its glorious chapters and gloomy pages. He reveals the mirror trick by which Aragon's work is reflected, along with the life of this gifted writer, to whom no literary form was foreign. And if his body of work continues to touch us, while his life continues to disconcert us, it is because it possesses a youthfulness, an insolence, an energy over which time has little power. Aragon has been loved as much as hated, admired as much as disparaged, for good and bad reasons together. This book does not intend to acquit him nor to condemn him, but to revisit the mystery of the man of whom we could say that he was doubtless "the last of the giants of our times."
